Today was my third day of clinicals and I took two of my own patients. Taking patients on my own helped me a lot to organize my day around interventions and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams. This was a big change from previously when I did all of the interventions and care with the patients, but wasn’t involved in planning or coordination. One of my favorite parts was working with one of the resident doctors. I was able to build a relationship with him and that will be beneficial to me in my future career.
This week what I have learned with my patient having altered level of consciousness is that one of the most important things to be aware of as the RN is safety. The patient was newly admitted a few hours before my shift and a neurologist was seeing him. It took quite a few hours for the neurologist to see him and until then there were not any interventions or orders for us to do. But this didn’t mean I had nothing to do for him. I spent a great amount of time keeping him safe in his room and helping to orient him to his new surroundings. I never really knew that sometimes maintaining safety is the only nursing objective.
